I used to read a lot of Shakespeare, and “shriving” is a form of “shrift.” “Short shrift” would be, I think, basically saying, “I’m going to give you two seconds to pray, and then you’re done.” But we live in the rich Age of the Internet, so let’s see what that says: “barely adequate time for confession before execution.”
