Here’s a tip: Draft write sober and edit while slightly tipsy. That’s worked for me. If I was slammed-out drunk while editing, it would be a mess. But have a first drink, look at your writing with an eye toward editing, drink, edit, edit, drink, then look at it again sober. And make the edits that seem reasonable for that iteration of the draft. Since Hemingway stopped writing mid-sentence, I’ll bet he did a similar thing. Editing with a hangover can be another experience altogether.
