Footings, Foundations, and Retaining Walls

Today’s contribution is brought to you courtesy of 1958.
Actually, it’s from my late father’s 5th edition copy of Architectural Graphic Standards, which he signed on March 24, 1958.

I was up again early this morning (Gee thanks, insomnia) absolutely absorbed by it.
Then I had an idea.
New years are great for ideas. But can they be sustained? Can the process be continued?

God knows every year I try to do that, even when it seems nothing is happening.
But that just isn’t true. Things are happening all the time.
So, going forward for the next 20 days of 100 Days of Words and Art, I’ll title each post from a chapter of Dad’s old book, whether or not it matches what I’ve drawn, or what’s on my mind that day.
This isn’t from the first chapter, but it got me thinking about getting one’s bearings, finding the foundation, and — if necessary — building retaining walls:
